Dear Jerry,
I learned today of Jane's passing and Elizabeth and I extend our heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
While you were tortured and abused as a prisoner of war, Jane was leading the charge in organizing the League of Families.
I had a small role in their organizational efforts. I remember at a small meeting promising Jane and other wives, parents and children of POWs and MIAs that in six months we would fill Constitution Hall in D.C. We did it because of the dedication and commitment of courageous women like your beloved Jane.
That was the beginning of the effort that awakened a nation to the plight of prisoners of war and those missing in action.
To Jane it was always family, honor, duty and country.
God Bless America,

Bob

Dear Jerry,

Diann and I just learned of Jane's passing away. She was very special to us. She was a great stalwart and strength to me while you were being held in North Vietnam. Not all wives and loved ones displayed the courage and endurance of their loved ones being held as prisoners of war, but Jane did. I know how proud you are of her great courage and steadfastness. When I met you on the Hanoi Taxi coming back from Hanoi, I felt that I already knew you from discussions I had had with Jane. We loved her, and we will miss her.

Please know that we feel your sorrow, if only as friends can. You were a great couple. You still have much to do, Jerry, because this country needs great patriots and men who will defend her interests, and you still have a great capacity to do that. Many Americans remember well your words as you spoke on behalf of all the returnees at Clark AFB. I count it as a great blessing to have had the opportunity to be there at that memorable time, and to have had the chance to get to know you and Jane better. In the time ahead please let us know if there is anything we can do to make your path easier.

GBU,

Roger and Diann Shields
